HIP CMS Upgrade Project is in charge of the Finnish participation in the CMS Tracker and its future upgrade. The Tracker is based on silicon sensors, and it is the largest silicon detector ever constructed. It is the innermost detector of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, located just around the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) beam pipe.
The main activities:
- Development of radiation hard silicon detectors for future high energy physics experiments, for example CMS Tracker upgrade.
- Operation of the Finnish Cosmic Rack (FinnCRack), a silicon based telescope measuring tracks of cosmic particles, and designed to test the CMS TOB detector systems as well as the novel radiation hard silicon detectors.
- Operation of the Silicon Beam Telescope (SiBT) at CERN H2.
