FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is an international research project being constructed at Darmstadt, Germany at GSI (Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung) –institute. The FAIR is expected to be completed by 2018. The Finnish FAIR cooperation is coordinated by Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP), and the research is being conducted mainly at the Detector Laboratory and at the Physics Department of the University of Jyväskylä.

The FAIR group in the Detector Laboratory together with Comenius University Bratislava and GSI is in charge of the design, modeling, testing and manufacture of 40 GEM-TPC (Gas Electron Multiplier - Time Projection Chamber) detectors for FAIR Super Fragment Separator (Super-FRS). These detectors will for a part of the particle beam diagnostics. The first prototype was suggesfully tested at GSI heavy ion beam at autumn 2010.
