FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is an international research project being constructed at Darmstadt, Germany at GSI (Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung) –institute. The FAIR is expected to be completed by 2015. The Finnish FAIR cooperation is coordinated by Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP), and the research is being conducted mainly at the Detector Laboratory and at the Physics Department of the University of Jyväskylä.

The FAIR group in the Detector Laboratory is in charge of the design, modeling, testing and manufacture of 40 GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detectors for FAIR Super Fragment Separator (Super-FRS). These detectors will for a part of the particle beam diagnostics. According to the experiences gained from a prototype, the final GEM design will be desided. The mass production of the detectors is also planned to be performed in the Detector Laboratory.
