What does the CMB really tell us?

Cosmic microwave background observations are usually interpreted within specific models, such as the LCDM model. I will discuss how we can instead analyse the CMB data in a manner which is independendent of the late-time cosmological model. In particular, I will highlight a curious tension between the small angle and large angle CMB anisotropies.
