Previous treatments of magnetic field effects on flavor-equilibrating processes have largely relied on the zero-temperature Fermi surface approximation, which is not a reliable approximation in the neutrino-transparent regime of matter relevant to supernovae and neutron star mergers. In our recent work, we go beyond this approximation by performing the full phase space integral to calculate direct Urca reaction rates in a background magnetic field incorporating thermal effects. We further incorporate the effect of collisional broadening of in-medium nucleons in highly dense nuclear matter. In this talk, I will discuss how these effects modify the flavor-equilibrium condition and the resulting bulk viscous dissipation of density oscillations relevant to postmerger dynamics. Furthermore, I will present our recent calculations of charged-current Urca emissivity and neutrino opacity at finite temperature and magnetic field, demonstrating how extreme magnetic fields effectively reduce the mean free path for thermal neutrinos under dynamical merger conditions.

Tuesday 20 October 2026 at 10:15 in A315 and using Zoom: Roman Zwicky (Edinburgh)
TBA
Abstract: TBA

Tuesday 27 October 2026 at 10:15 in A315 and using Zoom: Débora Mroczek (Turku)
TBA
Abstract: TBA

Tuesday 3 November 2026 at 10:15 in A315 and using Zoom: Antti Hippeläinen (Helsinki)
TBA
Abstract: TBA

Hopefully the up to 50 min + 10 min discussion long seminar/colloquium will be understandable to a wide audience.
Contacts: Keijo Kajantie (keijo kajantie at helsinki fi) [ HIP seminar],
Tushar Gupta (tushar.gupta at helsinki fi) [cosmo seminar]

Other related seminars

Friday 10-12 seminar series in D114: Astrophysics seminar
Mathematical Physics Seminar and Workshop series Wed 14-16 in Exactum C123.
InstituteQ Events and Seminars

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS / HIP JOINT COLLOQUIA / SEMINARS 2026 Tuesday 29 September 2026 at 10:15 in A315 and using Zoom: Pranjal Tambe (Pune) Transport Properties in Neutron Star Mergers: Impact of Finite Temperature and Strong Magnetic Fields Abstract: Astrophysical scenarios such as binary neutron star mergers, protoneutron stars, and core-collapse supernovae involve finite temperatures […]

["post-1001","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","post
["GET
