First Circular:

Welcome to Helsinki for the 4th International Pion-Nucleon PWA Workshop on June 26-29, 2007.

The accommodation has been reserved in the University guest house. The address is Vironkatu 1 C. You can check the location from the web-map. Please note that the end station of the bus 615 is in "Rautatientori" (Railway Square), slightly west from Vironkatu 1. The schedule of the bus is here.

When arriving to the airport in Helsinki-Vantaa there are basically two bus lines to the City: the Finnair airport bus (costing 5,20 euro) leaving about every 20 minutes from the platform 1a and the bus line 615 (costing 3,60) with also frequent service leaving from platform 1b. (For the line 615 various postfixs may appear, like 615T, but the end station is the same for all of them.)

The distance from the arrivals halls to the bus platforms is just a few tens of meters. From arrivals hall 2 when leaving the building you turn a little to the right, cross the taxi lane and platform 1a is immediately on your left and platform 1b on your right. From the arrival hall 3, you continue straight cross the taxi lane and the bus platforms are as above.

Both bus lines end at the main railway station, so one just goes with the bus to the end. However, the end station of the Finnair bus is on the west side of the station and the bus 615 on the east side. The hotels and the university guest house are on the east side, so from this point of view it is more convenient to take 615. The guest house lies a short walking distance (if you do not have too much luggage) from the station (behind the block east of the square). The guest house is at a 15 min walking distance from the station.

The Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP) is located in the new science campus in Kumpula a few kilometers north from the guest house, and is reached from the city center most conveniently by tram #6, direction Arabia.

Once on board #6 remain on board some 10-15 minutes, until passing the red (brick) St Pauls church (on the left) and then crossing a wide valley, after which the tram exits the main highway (E75) and turns to right. Exit the tram immediately after the turn. Cross the main highway (carefully) and walk up the hill to the Physicum building (huge concrete building with a white weather radar sphere on top). HIP is on the third floor, left corridor. A map & instructions are available at HIP web pages and at YTV Journey Planner page. The latter is a zoomable map, where the route of the tram is marked with green line and walking route with blue.

At the workshop we'll have a video projector, so it will be best, if you bring your talk with a memory stick. It is also possible to show normal transparencies.

Lunch will be available on the campus, it costs about 4,50-5,50 euros. Graduate students will get some small reduction.

It is a possibility to buy a 5-day tourist ticket for the city transport system, it costs 18 euros and is available at the city transport ticket office at the railway station or at a vending machine e.g. at the Railway Square.
