Computer services

Lecture hall

The lecture hall is equipped with a permanently installed PC running under Windows 2000 Pro. It is connected to a data projector and to the LAN and has diskette, CDROM and Zip 250 drives. The software available is at least MS Office XP, Adobe Acroreader, GhostView, a SSH-client and the WinAXE X-Window server. If you need Linux or Macintosh software please bring your own portable.

Computer class

The Windows-NT/Zen workstation PC class D210 on the same floor as the lecture hall in the middle of the building is available for logging in to your remote computer to read e-mail etc. There are 16 PCs that can be used in the class, because the PC at the front of the class is not available for us. To log in to the Novell netware PC-server use the userid corresponding to the number of the PC that you are using and the appropriate password. Please only use the username supplied with each PC, because simultaneous usage of a single username on several PCs will break the username profile. The usernames and passwords will be told when registering for the workshop. Look here for a more detailed description of the login and logout procedure to the Novell network. The faculty code mentioned in this description is ml. Please don't change the password on the PC you are using!

The location of the PC-class D210 can be seen on this map. Please note that the entrance is from the balcony shown on top of the picture.

Public WWW PC

In the wardrobe in the entry hall on the ground floor there is a public WWW-kiosk called HELI meant mainly for browsing the internal WWW-pages of University, but if you don't need Java and you can find the WWW-page you are looking for through a search engine then this severly restricted machine might be of some use (there is no button for entering a direct URL).

Network access for portable computers

Portable computers can only be connected through the Helsinki University Public network (HUPnet). A HUPnet connection can be made using a RJ-45 Ethernet-socket marked with the yellow HUPnet logo or with a 802.11 WLAN-card. HUPnet sockets are available in the library and in the entrance hall. Sockets not marked with the HUPnet logo must not be used! The WLAN covers most parts of the library, the lecture hall and the entrance hall. The HIP seminar room A315 can also be used when it is free, because there is WLAN coverage and some HUPnet cables.

To use HUPnet a PC with a RJ-45 cable or a WLAN card is needed, so please bring either one with you if you plan to use your own laptop. The PC must be installed with a SSL capable WWW-browser (IE, Netscape or Opera). WLAN users must of course have the appropriate Linux, Macintosh or Windows drivers installed. The network settings for the PC must use DHCP for the network configuration.

You must have a username and a password to authenticate yourself to HUPnet. The username and password will be told when registering for the workshop. Access to HUPnet is valid for two hours, re-authenticating gives you more time.

All outward connections from HUPnet use NAT, so no connections to the HUPnet connected computers can be made from outside the Helsinki University firewall, but usage of remote X-applications works. Only the IP-protocol is available on HUPnet, no IPX or AppleTalk-usage is possible.

If you use a WLAN card then you must supply the network name "Univ Helsinki HUPnet" to your WLAN card driver. No WLAN encryption key is used, so only encrypted connections like ssh and ssl should be used with WLAN HUPnet connections.

To access HUPnet first check that your PC uses DHCP (this is the default in most cases anyway). If not remove all fixed ip-address settings from your network setting and choose DHCP.

Remove any possible WWW/Internet proxy settings from your browser. Also set your WWW-browser to start with a blank page, this will speed up the login procedure considerably.

Connect to a HUPnet socket with a cable or check that your WLAN card has access to the wireless network.

Start your favorite SSL-enabled WWW-browser and try to access any WWW-page. Now you should have the HUPnet start page open. If you have not yet installed the University of Helsinki CA Certificate in your browser please do so by clicking the appropriate link on the start page. Then click on the other link to authenticate yourself. This opens a new page where you should enter the username and password that you have been told to use.

If your login succeeded you have access to the network for two hours, re-authenticating gives you more time. If JavaScript is enabled in your browser you get a warning 5 min and 1 min before the network connection expires.

To logout please click on the button labeled Logout from HUPnet.
