JUNO-Eu press release

For the past three days about 40 physicists from Italy, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia and Finland were taking part in the JUNO Europe Meeting in the AGORA building of the University of Jyväskylä. JUNO is a medium-baseline reactor neutrino experiment being constructed in Southern China with the aim to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and perform precision measurements of the Pontecorvo–Maki–Nakagawa–Sakata matrix elements. European scientists make a significant contribution to this international effort involving currently over half a thousand scientists from 72 institutions in 17 countries.

The main topics of the meeting included JUNO-related physics and software, photo-sensors and electronics, scintillator issues, top tracker, etc. In the concluding session the status and perspectives of scientific projects in the Pyhäsalmi mine were presented and discussed. In particular, in the context of the upcoming European Strategy Discussion, a possibility to locate there a giant neutrino observatory of the next generation for Astrophysical measurements was presented and deliberated. On the first day of the meeting 19 participants visited the mine. The previous JUNO meeting in Finland took place in October 2015. At that time 30 participants toured the underground infrastructure of the mine.

JUNO-Eu meeting was organized by the Accelerator Laboratory of the Physics Department at the University of Jyväskylä (http://www.jyu.fi/hendes ) together with INFN Milan (http://www.mi.infn.it/en/ ) and chaired by Gioacchino Ranucci (INFN) and Wladyslaw H. Trzaska (JyU). The event was co-sponsored by the Kerttu Saalasti Institute (http://www.oulu.fi/ksi-eng/ ) and Callio Lab (https://callio.info ).
