Our speaker is Thomas Michely, who is professor of experimental physics at the II. Physikalisches Institut of the University of Cologne. The title of his talk is ”About 2D crystals of clusters and correlated electrons in 1D cavities”. Thomas will give us an overview of recent findings on the fabrication and properties of 2D material systems. The talk will last about 30 minutes, after which there will be time for questions.

Vacancy in the Monte Carlo simulation project POSEIDON

The POSEIDON project (Position-sensitive detectors for nuclear fuel imaging) is a collaboration between the Helsinki Insitute of Physics at the University of Helsinki and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University.

We are looking for an expert in Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations to join a feasibility study of passive gamma emission tomography (PGET) using 3D position-sensitive semiconductor detectors. We aim to hire someone at the postdoc level, but advanced PhD students will be considered as well. More information can be found here.

“Modelling of metal plasma initiation in vacuum arcing using particle-in-cell method”

Abstract: The vacuum arcing phenomenon that can occur on metal surfaces under high electric field involves many complex mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. The processes that lead up to the ignition of a vacuum arc include field emission of electrons, resistive heating, evaporation of neutrals and their ionization. In this presentation, we describe the development of a simulation model incorporating these different interactions so that their significance for the vacuum arcing phenomenon can be identified. The particle-in-cell method is used to simulate particle collision processes in the metal plasma using the FEMOCS code. A static Cu nanotip is simulated up to the point of thermal runaway in different conditions to study the initial stages of the vacuum arc.

Finnish Physical Society Master’s Thesis Prize awarded to Kaapo Seppänen

The Finnish Physical Society has awarded the Master’s Thesis Prize for the best final thesis for a master’s degree in the area of physical sciences in 2021 to Kaapo Seppänen for his thesis “HTL Self-energies in Hot and Dense QCD”. Kaapo wrote the thesis on theoretical particle physics for the Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki.  Risto Paatelainen and Aleksi Vuorinen acted as supervisors.

Abstract:  Real-time methods during thin film deposition are important tools for fundamental research and industrial process control. They give unique access to complex structure formation processes, revealing surprising details about interface formation and crystal growth during thin film deposition and thermally induced solid-state reactions. This will be demonstrated on the example of the metal/semiconductor interface formation.

Vacancy in the Monte Carlo simulation project POSEIDON

The POSEIDON project (Position-sensitive detectors for nuclear fuel imaging) is a collaboration between the Helsinki Insitute of Physics at the University of Helsinki and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University.

We are looking for an expert in Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations to join a feasibility study of passive gamma emission tomography (PGET) using 3D position-sensitive semiconductor detectors. We aim to hire someone at the postdoc level, but advanced PhD students will be considered as well. More information can be found here.
