“Thin film materials design & some thoughts on complexity and sustainability”
Abstract: Designing the next generation of thermally stable thin films without utilizing trial and error-based methodologies requires truly predictive computational approaches. Important design criteria for protective thin film materials are the mechanical behavior as well as thermal and chemical stability. In this talk an effort is made to describe the good, the bad and the ugly of our predictive capabilities today. Examples of predictions that have been validated experimentally and experimental data that cannot be described theoretically will be presented. Implications for future design efforts will be discussed also in the context of (chemical and structural) complexity as well as sustainability.

The conference will take place on 29-31 of March 2023 in Tampere, Finland organized by the Finnish Physical Society, the Physics unit of Tampere University and Tampere University. The theme of Physics Days 2023 will be “Physics makes dreams come true”.

DOCTORAL DEFENCE
Valtteri Lindholm will defend the doctoral dissertation entitled “Two-Point Correlation Function as a Cosmological Probe” in the Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, on 17 February 2023 at 13:00. The public examination will take place at the following address: Physicum, auditorio E204, Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2.
CRCN Researcher at CNRS, PhD Guilhem Lavaux, CNRS / Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris, will serve as the opponent, and Hannu Kurki-Suonio as the custos.
The dissertation will be published in the series HIP Internal Report Series.

EDUFI Fellowship
The EDUFI Fellowship is intended, particularly, for providing initial funding to carry out research for a doctoral thesis in Finland.

Purpose: initial funding for completing a doctoral research project in Finland, completion of a double degree or a study visit on exceptionally compelling reasons

The Finnish Cultural Foundation
In the October round of applications, it is possible to apply for a regular working and/or expenditure grant or a special purpose grant, such as Art for Everyone, Additional Million-euro Funding to Science, Science Education, DNA in Time and Space and Eminentia grants. The Application Guidelines for Grants apply to all of these. Special purpose grants also have their own detailed additional guidelines.

(In Finnish) Suomalaisen Tiedeakatemian Väisälä-hankeapuraha
Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia on perustanut uuden Väisälä-hankeapurahan. Apuraha on tarkoitettu Suomessa toimivalle tutkijauran vakinaistamispolun alkuvaiheen tutkijalle oman tutkimusryhmän perustamiseen ja ryhmän tutkimuskuluihin. Vakinaistamispolun alkuvaiheen tutkijalla tarkoitetaan niin sanotun tenure trackin ensimmäisen vaiheen tehtävissä olevaa tutkijaa (assistant professor -taso). Hakukelpoisia aloja ovat fysiikka, matematiikka, geofysiikka, tähtitiede ja meteorologia.
