Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Friday 17 November at 14.15, Exactum (CK111)

Susi Lehtola

“Studies of the numerical behavior of density functionals”

Abstract: Electronic structure calculations, which are widely used in both industry and
academia to model the structure and behavior of materials, understand chemical
reaction paths and to develop new chemical species and catalysts, are
practically synonymous to running calculations with density functional theory.
Although the theory is exact in principle, the exact functional is unknown and
in practice one has to resort to the use of various density functional
approximations (DFAs). Even though a few select DFAs such as PBE and B3LYP
predominate practical applications, the development of novel DFAs continues, and
several new ones are published every year. The so-called meta-GGA functionals
represent the most sophisticated type of DFAs, and recent meta-GGAs like wB97M-V
and r2SCAN have shown promising accuracy for applications in benchmark studies.

However, the numerical behavior of density functionals has received little
attention in the literature. In this talk, I will discuss our recent work into the study of
the numerical behavior of recent DFAs, which has revealed many recent density functionals
to be numerically ill-behaved.
