“Metrological use and improvement of a commercial atomic force microscope”
Abstract: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an affordable and powerful tool for investigating surfaces. However, AFM’s high resolution and precision alone do not guarantee accuracy. To ensure accuracy, a metrologically informed approach is required. At VTT MIKES, I performed calibration measurements on a commercial AFM. AFMs have generally also been limited in their speed and scanning area. The MetExSPM project has sought to make AFMs overcome some of these limitations, for example by developing active probes that provide faster scanning speeds and other added capabilities compared to passive cantilevers. MetExSPM seeks to modify the commercial AFM to improve, such as giving it the ability to use active probes it was not designed for. To help with this task, I built a small test AFM and used it for testing the active probes and breaking down the integration process into the commercial AFM into separate steps.
The inaugural lectures of the new professors
Newly appointed professors are celebrated at the University of Helsinki twice a year: usually in May and in December. As they take up their new role, each professor holds a public inaugural lecture.
Twenty-seven newly appointed professors of the University of Helsinki will give their inaugural lectures on Wednesday, 13 December 2023, starting at 14. The lectures take place in the University’s Main Building (Aleksanterinkatu 5) and the public can watch the lectures also via live stream (Unitube or Zoom Webinar).

The Runar Bäckström Foundation
The aim of the Runar Bäckström foundation is to encourage and support inventions that are beneficial to Finnish businesses and thereby strengthen their global competitiveness. The foundation assigns grants once a year. Individuals, work groups, companies or associations can apply for the grants. There are no formal qualifications for the grantees, such as a certain academic degree.

Japani-Suomi Yhdistyksen Chujo Watanabe – rahastosta julistetaan haettavaksi yksi apuraha, suuruudeltaan JPY 300 000 käytettäväksi vuoden 2024 loppuun mennessä.

Säätiö julistaa nyt haettavaksi Osk. Huttunen Fellowship –apurahan lukuvuodelle 2024–2025. Apuraha on tarkoitettu professoreille ja muille akateemisesti meritoituneille, vähintään dosenttitasoisille senioritutkijoille. Se mahdollistaa pääsääntöisesti akateemisen lukuvuoden (12 kk) mittaisen tutkimuskauden Cambridgen yliopistossa, kuitenkin stipendiaatille parhaiten soveltuvalla aloitus- ja lopetusajalla.
