Tieteen tiedotuksen apurahojen haku on kaksivaiheinen. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa hakija lähettää lyhyen ja napakan aiehakemuksen. Toimita aiehakemus yhtenä pdf-tiedostona sähköpostitse 18.8.2023 mennessä osoitteeseen tieteentiedotus [at ] gmail.com . Saateviestiin toivomme merkittäväksi: vastuullisen hakijan nimi ja yhteystiedot, hankkeen nimi sekä lyhyt tiivistelmä hankkeesta.

Aiehakemusten perusteella jatkoon pääsevät hankkeet valitaan syyskuussa, ja näitä pyydetään toimittamaan varsinainen hakemus myöhemmin.

“Mechanical Modeling of Multi-coil Transducers for Brain Stimulation in High Static Magnetic Fields”

Abstract: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows the effects of brain stimulation through the changes in brain metabolism, which is a promising tool for brain research and for improving the efficacy and safety of the existing TMS treatments. The biggest setback in current TMS–fMRI technology arises from the mechanical forces formed on the transducer due to the interplay of the magnetic fields from the MRI and the changing current in the coil, leading to breakage of the transducers and additional safety risks. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the mechanical stresses on multi-locus TMS (mTMS) transducers inside a high-field fMRI bore using finite element modeling, and to build and test transducer options based on the simulation results. Our results provide novel inights on the mechanical behaviour of the coils during and after the stimulation, and give suggestions for more durable TMS coil designs.
