Veijo Honkimäki, ESRF – The European Synchrotron, Grenoble, France: Extremely brilliant source – ESRF

The ESRF – the European Synchrotron, located in Grenoble, France – is the world’s most intense X-ray source for scientific research. Founded in 1988, the ESRF is funded by 22 partner countries. Each year, 10,000 scientists from all over the world come to the ESRF to probe the structure of matter in all fields of research, ranging from the chemistry and physics of materials to archaeology and cultural heritage, together with structural biology applications, environmental sciences and information science and nanotechnologies.

 

At a moment the lattice of the storage ring is under upgrade to deliver the world’s first high-energy fourth-generation synchrotron light source, open to users in 2020. The new storage ring, together with the most advanced portfolio of new beamlines, instrumentation and data management tools, will increase X-ray performances 100 times compared to present day synchrotrons. ESRF will provide new tools for the investigation of materials and living matter from the macroscopic world down to the nanometre scale and even down to the single atom, sparking new research opportunities in fields such as health and medicines, energy and the environment, cultural heritage and palaeontology and the development of new sustainable materials.

Persons who recently have obtained their PhD may apply for a postdoctoral scholarship. The purpose of a postdoctoral scholarship is to enable the grantee to further develop as a researcher. Applicants for a postdoctoral scholarship may also apply for support for research related costs and travel. A separate application for these purposes must be made.

Graduate student scholarships

The graduate student stipend can be awarded for a period of one year or a half year, preferably for the period 1.7. – 31.12. to a student who has been accepted by the university as a doctoral student. The stipend can be awarded conditionally to a student about to graduate.

(In Finnish) HY+aamu: Uusi lukiolaki tulee – verkostoidu yliopistolaisten kanssa

Elokuussa voimaan astuva uusi lukiolaki velvoittaa lukioita yhteistyöhön korkeakoulujen kanssa. Kesäkuussa järjestettävä HY+aamu tarjoaa tilaisuuden tutustua Helsingin yliopiston ja lukioiden väliseen toimintaan. Aamun aiheena mm.  Helsingin yliopiston kanssa tehtävän kouluyhteistyön yleiset linjaukset.

 

Tilaisuus on maksuton, mutta osallistujamäärä rajoitettu. Mikäli jätät saapumatta tilaisuuteen, peruutusmaksu 50 euroa peritään.

FAIR  review report published

In 2015 the shareholders of FAIR GmbH decided that the science case and construction project of FAIR should be reviewed in 2019. The international group of experts chaired by Lyndon Evans (and Juha Äystö as a member) recently presented its final report to the shareholders. The reports confirms the globally outstanding level of the science programme of FAIR and rated the it as a top international science project for decades. The report also includes the assessment of additional costs that are around 850 M€ higher than what was anticipated in 2015. Large part of the additional costs are attributed to civil construction. JOINT HIP SEMINAR AND KUMPULA PHYSICS COLLOQUIUM ON 24.05.2019 AT 13.15 IN D101

The next Kumpula Physics colloquium will take place on Friday 24 May at 13:15 (note the unusual time!), and will follow the HIP seminar given by Physics Nobel Prize winner Frank Wilczek. Our speaker will be Bergita Ganse, a medical doctor, book author and scientist specialising in space medicine. She is currently affiliated with Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK and also works as a doctor at DLR, the German Space Agency. Her research deals with the musculoskeletal system in space, and she is involved in large international studies with both NASA and ESA.

Post doc -apuraha on tarkoitettu tohtorin tutkinnon suorittaneiden, enintään 35 vuotta täyttäneiden päärahoituslähteeksi (henkilökohtainen apuraha sekä matkakulut) keskimäärin vuoden mittaisessa työskentelyssä ulkomaisessa yliopistossa tai tutkimuslaitoksessa.

Expert services for the proposal and negotiation phases of external funding

Research Funding Services support researchers in obtaining competitive external research funding. Services are especially focused on the EU Horizon 2020 and other international funding proposals.

Senior advisors support researchers in finding funding opportunities, proposal preparation, and contract negotiations. They are the first contact point for support in Research Funding Services.

Grant coaches give in-depth support in the planning and writing process of selected major proposals, e.g., ERC and Horizon 2020 collaborative projects coordinated by the University of Helsinki.

Iris.ai on tekoälyyn perustuva tutkimusassistentti, joka käy läpi tiedeartikkelit tutkijan puolesta ja poimii niistä oleellisimmat asiat. Iris.ai-työpajoja järjestetään huhtikuussa joka kampuksella.

KUMPULA PHYSICS COLLOQUIUM ON 12.04.2019 AT 14.15 IN D101
The next Kumpula Physics colloquium will take place on Friday 12 April. The speaker will be Pauline Gagnon, retired Senior Research Scientist in particle physics from Indiana University and popular science writer. Pauline Gagnon has conducted most of her research career at CERN, searching for dark matter particles. She is strongly involved in science communication to the general public, and is the author of a popular science book on particle physics. In the recent years, she has been giving numerous public talks about diversity issues in physics.

In her presentation, titled The tragic destiny of Mileva Marić Einstein, she will tell us more about the little-known story of a hidden female figure in physics history.

The talk will last about 30 minutes, after which there will be a cocktail reception. Welcome!

The opening of Guidance Corner, 9 April at 14.00 – 14.30

Guidance Corner is the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Library’s joint gift to the 150-year-old Student Union of the University of Helsinki. It provides low threshold advice and guidance services on, for example, wellbeing, digital skills and job seeking – and even a weekly energising exercise break.

Guidance Corner is located on the third floor of Kaisa House, Fabianinkatu 30.

Jatko-opiskeluapurahat on tarkoitettu ylemmän yliopistotutkinnon suorittaneille suomalaisille, joiden ikä hakuajan päättyessä on enintään 26 vuotta.
