Kumpula Physics colloquium, Friday 26.1.2024
The first Kumpula Physics Colloquium of the Spring series will take place on Friday 26.1.2024 at 14:15 at Chemicum A110.
Our speaker is Hanna Vehkamäki, who is a professor in computational aerosol physics and is leading a research group focusing on computational studies of molecular cluster formation in the atmosphere. She is the director of Research Council of Finland Centre of Excellence ‘Virtual Laboratory for Molecular Level Atmospheric Transformations’ and currently faculty of science vice dean responsible for equality and work well-being. Physics Days – Fysiikan päivät 2024 will be organized in Helsinki on March 4-6, 2024. The venue is the Main building of the University of Helsinki at the city centre. The webpage of the conference can be found at

The theme of Physics Days 2024 is “Strangers united”. The conference will cover a broad range of topics in physics with sessions focusing on computational science, models and phenomenology, machine learning and artificial intelligence, education and outreach, observations, and experiments and infrastructures.
Registration and submission of abstracts to Physics Days 2024 is now open and closes on January 26, 2024. Instructions and links can be found at the conference website.
Physics Days 2024 is jointly organized by the University of Helsinki Department of Physics, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research INAR, Helsinki Institute of Physics, and the Finnish Physical Society.

FPS Master´s Thesis Prize 2023
The Finnish Physical Society awards an annual prize for an excellent Master’s thesis in the field of physical sciences. The purpose of this prize is to support early career researchers and acknowledge them for the exceptional work.

The University of Helsinki Funds
University of Helsinki Funds grant a total of approximately 400,000 euros in various scholarships and grants to students and researchers each year.
Mainly only students, researchers and staff at the University of Helsinki can apply for scholarships from the University of Helsinki’s funds.

(In Finnish) Suomalaisen Tiedeakatemian Väisälä-hankeapuraha
Apuraha on tarkoitettu Suomessa toimivalle tutkijauran vakinaistamispolun alkuvaiheen tutkijalle (hakija) oman tutkimusryhmän perustamisen ja ryhmän tutkimuskuluihin. Vakinaistamispolun alkuvaiheen tutkijalla tarkoitetaan tenure trackin ensimmäisen vaiheen tehtävissä olevaa tutkijaa (assistant professor -taso). Hakukelpoisia aloja ovat fysiikka, matematiikka, geofysiikka, tähtitiede ja meteorologia. Hakijan tulee edustaa jotain edellä mainituista aloista. Hankkeen eduksi katsotaan monitieteisyyden edistäminen.
Apuraha on kolmevuotinen ja suuruudeltaan kokonaisuudessaan 150 000 euroa. Apurahoja jaetaan enintään kaksi. Osa apurahasta maksetaan työskentelyapurahana tutkimusryhmän jäsenille ja osa tutkimuskuluihin kohdistettuna rahoituksena.
Haku on kaksivaiheinen. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa toimitetaan aiesuunnitelma (ensimmäinen vaihe 1.–31.1.2024) Ensimmäisen vaiheen aiesuunnitelma liitteineen tulee olla lähetetty viimeistään tiistaina 31.1.2024 klo 24.00. Myöhästyneitä hakemuksia ei käsitellä. Tiedusteluihin vastataan Tiedeakatemian toimiston aukioloaikojen puitteissa.
Toinen vaihe toteutetaan huhtikuussa 2024 (toinen vaihe 1.–30.4.2024). Toiseen vaiheeseen päässeille hakijoille ilmoitetaan henkilökohtaisesti.

Japani-Suomi Yhdistyksen Chujo Watanabe – rahastosta julistetaan haettavaksi yksi apuraha, suuruudeltaan JPY 300 000 käytettäväksi vuoden 2024 loppuun mennessä.
Apurahat on ensisijaisesti tarkoitettu Japanissa tapahtuvaan opiskelu- ja/tai tutkimustyöhön. Etusijalle asetetaan nuoret hakijat ja hakijalta edellytetään jonkinlaista japanin kielen taitoa. Aiempi osallistuminen Suomen ja Japanin väliseen ystävyystoimintaan on eduksi.
