Climate science and the energy transformation: challenges and opportunities (Professor David Brayshaw, University of Reading)

Tuesday 24 June 2025 at15:00-16:00, DYNAMICUM Aqua 1A13c

Energy systems around the world are undergoing rapid and far-reaching change. From the electrification of transport and heating, through to the growing dependence on renewables and increasing weather-exposure of infrastructure, there is an urgent need for high-quality weather and climate information across all time scales to support the energy transition. While much progress has been made over the last 10-15 years, there remain many areas of “disconnect” between energy- and climate- science that need to be addressed to enable deeper exchanges of ideas, data and know-how. This presentation will outline some of the questions, challenges and opportunities involved.

Asteroid Day: Asteroids – A source of gold or the end of the world?

The International Asteroid Day will be celebrated at the Observatory of Helsinki University Museum Flame (Kopernikuksentie 1) on Monday, 30 June 2025 from 16:00 to 19:00. Meet asteroid researchers and hear about asteroid impact hazards and asteroid mining, and immerse yourself in the fascinating past of the Observatory in its exhibitions, and astronomical phenomena from our own solar system to distant galaxies. Although the event is targeted primarily for adults, it also offers experiences for the youngest in the family.

Welcome to the Observatory on International Asteroid Day! Free entrance.

Special summer Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Monday 23 June at 14.15, Physicum (D112)

Prof. Chris Greening (Monash University)

“Microbial oxidation of atmospheric trace gases: from enzymes to ecosystems”

Professor Chris Greening hosts a diverse team seeking to understand the interactions between microbes and climate change. A graduate of the University of Oxford (BSc/MSc, Biochemistry, 2010) and University of Otago (PhD, Microbiology, 2014, he has been a group leader at Monash University since 2016. Among his distinctions, he has received multiple fellowships, published over 130 publications mostly in top journals, and was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Life Scientist of the Year in 2023. A highly collaborative researcher, he has partnered with over 100 laboratories worldwide, as well as large-scale intervention programs and diverse industrial organisations. Also an empowering and inclusive leader, he has mentored multiple researchers to independence.

Abstract of the talk: The atmosphere provides most of the oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen that we depend on, but until now has been thought to lack sufficient energy to sustain life. Here I will demonstrate that diverse microbes live by harvesting the small amounts of hydrogen and carbon monoxide from air using high-affinity enzymes. Through research focused on the model bacterium Mycobacterium smegmatis, I will explain the physiological role, genetic regulation, and structural basis of this process. This depends on hydrogenases and carbon monoxide dehydrogenases with structural features that confer high affinity and oxygen insensitivity. These enzymes rely on the newly discovered but widely distributed process of long-range quinone transport to transfer electrons to the respiratory chain. Finally, I will reveal that numerous ecosystems are partially or primarily powered by atmospheric energy sources, and show the enzymes involved can be harnessed in biotechnology to produce electricity and ATP from air. These insights were gained through integrating multiple biophysical techniques, including cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography, protein film electrochemistry, EPR and FTIR spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. These findings redefine the minimal requirements for life and have broad climate, medical, and astrobiological implications.

Extra Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Tuesday 6 May 2025 at 13.15, Physicum E204

Prof. Gerald Seidler (University of Washington, Seattle, WA)

“From the Early Days of Quantum Mechanics to Modern Analytical Practice: The History and Future of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy”

Abstract: X-rays have found both fundamental and applied interest since their accidental discovery by Roentgen in 1895.  One of the longest-lived mysteries in x-ray science was the correct physical description of the fine structure that appears in the x-ray absorption spectrum of all materials.  This was first observed in 1920, but despite considerable theoretical effort a foundational description of the x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) was lacking until the 1971 effort of Sayers, Stern, and Lytle.  In that work, a scattering treatment of photoelectron physics encompassed both a predictive and an interpretive framework for XAFS.  The subsequent development and growth of XAFS capability at synchrotron x-ray light sources and the decades-spanning efforts by theorists have together made XAFS a fully mature method that is undergoing rapid diversification.  While the typical XAFS user in the year 2000 was an x-ray expert frequently working on fundamental aspects of the XAFS phenomenon itself, the typical XAFS user in present days is instead pursuing scientific discovery in the materials science or chemistry of sustainability, the fundamental and applied aspects of catalysis, the development of new biological molecules for artificial photosynthesis or therapeutic use, or the environmental science or government regulatory considerations of human-made contamination in nature. In this talk I’ll review the history of XAFS and discuss its ongoing transformation from a curiosity of the interaction of photons with matter in 1920 into a theory-informed experimental method with global impact and a growing future scope.

“Characterisation of the Medipix4 photon counting chip using X-rays”

Abstract: The Medipix4 ASIC is a CMOS pixel detector read-out chip working in single counting mode, which is currently in development. It is designed to be combined with different semiconductor sensors to convert X-rays into detectable electric signals. To test the chip, I performed measurements with and without a charge sharing suppression circuit enabled at different X-ray fluxes. I also did some X-ray imaging with the device.
