“Probing into quinone binding in respiratory complex 1 using machine learning methods”

Abstract: Quinone binding is a central step in the mechanism of respiratory complex 1, leading to global structural changes related to proton pumping, and to transferring electrons to other components in the electron transfer chain. In this talk, some methods and results on using machine learning on molecular dynamics trajectories are presented, focusing on the relationship between quinone binding and the change in protein structure.

Our speaker is Peter Liljeroth,who is a professor at the Department of Applied Physics at Aalto University, Finland, since 2011 and heads the Atomic Scale Physics group.The title of his talk is ”Designer quantum materials with van der Waals heterostructures”. Peter will illustrate the idea using his recent results on realizing topological superconductivity and artificial heavy fermion systems in vdW heterostructures.

Abstract: We show that the first law for the Kerr-NUT spacetime is straightforwardly established with the surface charge method. The entropy is explicitly found as a charge and its value is not proportional to the horizon area. We conclude that there are unavoidable contributions from the Misner strings to the charges, still the mass and angular momentum gets standard values. However, there are no independent charges associated with the Misner strings.

Vacancy in the Monte Carlo simulation project POSEIDON

The POSEIDON project (Position-sensitive detectors for nuclear fuel imaging) is a collaboration between the Helsinki Insitute of Physics at the University of Helsinki and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University.

We are looking for an expert in Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations to join a feasibility study of passive gamma emission tomography (PGET) using 3D position-sensitive semiconductor detectors. “Modelling of metal plasma initiation in vacuum arcing using particle-in-cell method”

Abstract: The vacuum arcing phenomenon that can occur on metal surfaces under high electric field involves many complex mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. The processes that lead up to the ignition of a vacuum arc include field emission of electrons, resistive heating, evaporation of neutrals and their ionization. In this presentation, we describe the development of a simulation model incorporating these different interactions so that their significance for the vacuum arcing phenomenon can be identified. The particle-in-cell method is used to simulate particle collision processes in the metal plasma using the FEMOCS code. A static Cu nanotip is simulated up to the point of thermal runaway in different conditions to study the initial stages of the vacuum arc.

Finnish Physical Society Master’s Thesis Prize awarded to Kaapo Seppänen

The Finnish Physical Society has awarded the Master’s Thesis Prize for the best final thesis for a master’s degree in the area of physical sciences in 2021 to Kaapo Seppänen for his thesis “HTL Self-energies in Hot and Dense QCD”. Kaapo wrote the thesis on theoretical particle physics for the Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki.  Risto Paatelainen and Aleksi Vuorinen acted as supervisors.

Vacancy in the Monte Carlo simulation project POSEIDON

The POSEIDON project (Position-sensitive detectors for nuclear fuel imaging) is a collaboration between the Helsinki Insitute of Physics at the University of Helsinki and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University.

We are looking for an expert in Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations to join a feasibility study of passive gamma emission tomography (PGET) using 3D position-sensitive semiconductor detectors. Vice-rector Paula Eerola, previous director of HIP and current member of the HIP Board, has been appointed as president of the Academy of Finland by the Finnish government.

Prof. Kai Nordlund, dean of the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Science and member of the HIP Board, has been appointed as vice-rector of the University of Helsinki by the University of Helsinki Board. In the same meeting dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy Jouni Hirvonen was also appointed as vice-rector and vice-rector Sari Lindblom as rector.

Young Academy Finland (established in 2017) is a multidisciplinary organization for young researchers, which aims to promote research and strengthen the status of science and scholarship in society.

Vacancy in the Monte Carlo simulation project POSEIDON

The POSEIDON project (Position-sensitive detectors for nuclear fuel imaging) is a collaboration between the Helsinki Insitute of Physics at the University of Helsinki and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University.

We are looking for an expert in Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations to join a feasibility study of passive gamma emission tomography (PGET) using 3D position-sensitive semiconductor detectors. We aim to hire someone at the postdoc level, but advanced PhD students will be considered as well. More information can be found here.
