QUANTUM SOFTWARE DAY 2026 IN AALTO UNIVERSITY ON FRIDAY 23.1.2026

The Quantum Software Day 2026 is an event connecting industry, researchers, students, and others curious of quantum computing to discuss emerging topics in quantum computing software and its applications.

The day consists of talks, a poster session, networking opportunities, and refreshments. Lunch will be provided.

THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI FUNDS

University of Helsinki Funds grant a total of approximately 400,000 euros in various scholarships and grants to students and researchers each year. Mainly only students, researchers and staff at the University of Helsinki can apply for scholarships from the University of Helsinki’s funds. All grant and scholarship recipients are invited to the celebration of grant recipients and donors in the spring, where they can also meet the donors who gave them the scholarship.

The funds’ application round for 2026 is from January, 14 to February, 6, 2026. Read the descriptions for the grants you can apply for this year, and apply by logging into the University of Helsinki Grant Portal.

“Deciphering material structure and dynamics with simulation-supported X-ray absorption spectroscopy”

Abstract: X-ray absorption spectroscopy is one of the direct structural tools that provides information about the local environment around a selected atom type. The method is applicable to a wide range of materials, from molecules to single crystals, and is extensively used for in situ and operando studies at synchrotron radiation facilities. Although the theoretical foundations of X-ray absorption spectra are well established, their interpretation remains complex due to the ill-posed nature of the problem. To address this issue, advanced simulation methods such as reverse Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics based on universal machine-learning interatomic potentials can be employed. Their application to photochromic and two-dimensional layered materials will be discussed.

“Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering study on III-V compound semiconductor (GaAs single crystal)”

Abstract: RIXS is not well developed for semiconductors, and this exploratory project at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) beamline ID20 confirms that RIXS features and possible elementary or low-energy electronic excitations can also be observed for semiconductors using this class of spectroscopy. In this study, I will present experimental XAS spectra for both Ga and As, as well as RIXS 2D maps for both Ga and As K-edge. Furthermore, q-dependent or momentum-dependent scans for the As K-edge along the Gamma-L line of the Brillouin zone show interesting periodic behaviour, which might represent some possible elementary excitations, but further work needs to be done.

HIP PROGRAMME DIRECTOR ALEKSI VUORINEN TO LEAD NEW FINNISH CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH

The Research Council of Finland has selected 11 new Centres of Excellence (CoEs) that represent the highest level of scientific ambition and collaboration in the country. Vuorinen’s CoE, Centre of Excellence in Neutron-Star Physics, explores the behaviour of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions—linking fundamental theory to the astrophysical phenomena observed in the universe.

The co-PI’s of the CoE are Anu Kankainen and Markus Kortelainen from the University of Jyväskylä, Joonas Nättilä from the University of Helsinki, and Juri Poutanen from the University of Turku.

Abstract: Energetics of proton transfer (PT) is important to understand the underlying mechanism of many enzymes. Various Free Energy methods have been developed with varying degrees of speed and accuracy. One elegant and fast free energy method is metadynamics. In this seminar we will go through the basics of metadynamics and see if we can utilize this method to study proton transfer using QM\MM simulation. Furthermore, we will discuss a new reaction coordinate that will help us circumvent some difficulties regarding the study of PT.

THE OPEN SCIENCE AND RESEARCH WINTER CONFERENCE 2025

Time and venue: 2.12. – 4.12.2025, the University of Helsinki and the House of Sciences and Letters in Helsinki. The theme of the Winter Conference is “As open as possible.” The event is organised by the National Coordination for Open Science and Research together with the University of Helsinki.

“Multifractality for certain spectral problems in mathematical physics”

Abstract: Many systems which are in a state of transition between two physical regimes display a complex type of self-similarity known as multifractality. Examples are solutions to PDE in quantum mechanics, such as eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on pseudo-integrable billiards (transition between chaotic and integrable dynamics), eigenfunctions in the Anderson model (localization-delocalization transition) or fluid dynamics (loss of regularity of a solution with smooth initial condition). I will give an introduction to this field from a mathematical point of view, and discuss some recent progress for a number of models such as quantum billiards, quantum graphs and the Euler equations on the 3-torus.

This talk will be based on joint work with Jon Keating (Oxford).

“Quantifying eddy currents in diffusion MRI quality assurance”

Abstract: Diffusion MRI experiments are susceptible to eddy currents induced in conductive structures of the MRI scanner, resulting in geometric image distortions that can compromise measurement reliability, accuracy and consistency. This seminar investigates vendor-independent quality assurance methods for quantifying these distortions using phantom data.
