Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Friday 8 September 2023 at 11.15, Physicum D112

Alexander Mühleip (the University of Glasgow)

“Uncovering molecular mechanisms of cristae formation”

Our next Mat/Bio Physics seminar by Dr. Alexander Mühleip. Dr. Mühleip is currently a research fellow at the University of Glasgow and has done seminal work in structural biology of bioenergetic proteins (see one his latest works – https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05817-y). He will introduce us to the fascinating world of mitochondrial energy generation.

Abstract: Cristae are the reaction chambers of the mitochondrion in which oxidative phosphorylation complexes generate and harvest the membrane potential. Different phyla display distinct membrane morphologies and lineage-specific subunit compositions of OXPHOS complexes, however their structure and function have remained poorly understood. By combining structural and functional analysis, our recent work has contributed to understanding how OXPHOS complexes from different organisms form highly divergent higher-order assemblies to induce membrane curvature and generate micro-compartments that allow mitochondrial energy conversion to occur.

Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Thursday 31 August 2023 at 13.15, Physicum D112

We will have our next seminar by Eryang Lu, who has recently been selected as Academy of Finland’s research fellow. He will introduce us to his exciting upcoming project and some new interesting results.

Title: “Defect engineering in multi-principal element random alloys”

Abstract: Multi-principal-element random alloys (MPEAs), or high entropy alloys (HEAs), are drawing strong research interest in recent two decades. Many developed HEAs have shown outstanding physical and mechanical properties under various extreme conditions. The fundamental aspects of defect features and atomic motion mechanisms that govern the “unusual” properties in MPEAs are still not clear. In this project, we will focus on defect processing with various ion beam implantations, microstructural characterization with comprehensive experimental methods, and atomistic simulations on the selected models. The ultimate goal of the proposed project is to develop a detailed description and analysis of defects and elementary diffusion properties in MPEAs. We hope the scientific observations will fill the knowledge gap in bringing the MPEAs concept closer to industrial implementations, and even come up with new theories for further development of innovative high performance metallic materials.

Tieteen tiedotuksen apurahojen haku on kaksivaiheinen. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa hakija lähettää lyhyen ja napakan aiehakemuksen. Toimita aiehakemus yhtenä pdf-tiedostona sähköpostitse 18.8.2023 mennessä osoitteeseen tieteentiedotus [at ] gmail.com .
