“Mechanical Modeling of Multi-coil Transducers for Brain Stimulation in High Static Magnetic Fields”

Abstract: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows the effects of brain stimulation through the changes in brain metabolism, which is a promising tool for brain research and for improving the efficacy and safety of the existing TMS treatments. The biggest setback in current TMS–fMRI technology arises from the mechanical forces formed on the transducer due to the interplay of the magnetic fields from the MRI and the changing current in the coil, leading to breakage of the transducers and additional safety risks. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the mechanical stresses on multi-locus TMS (mTMS) transducers inside a high-field fMRI bore using finite element modeling, and to build and test transducer options based on the simulation results. Our results provide novel inights on the mechanical behaviour of the coils during and after the stimulation, and give suggestions for more durable TMS coil designs.

“Complex Ga2O3 System Explored by Machine-Learning Molecular Dynamics”

Abstract: Ga2O3 is a vital next-generation ultrawide-bandgap semiconductor of great research and application interest. Computational modeling of Ga2O3 atomic systems using ab initio calculations has complemented experimental studies so far, but to investigate the complex phase engineering of Ga2O3 with coexisting polymorphs, large-scale atomistic modeling using molecular dynamics (MD) is required. This can now be achieved with the newly developed machine-learning (ML) interatomic potentials. In this talk, we will explore the wide range of utilities of our ML-MD simulations by presenting several experimentally-relevant examples, which provide in-depth insights into the complex and intriguing nature of the Ga2O3 system.

“GPGPU Acceleration of the Green’s Function Method based Photoelectrochemical Cell model”

Abstract: The feasibility of general purpose graphics processing unit (GPGPU) acceleration to the non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) equation solver of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell model is investigated. PEC cells have great potential as a source of green energy and therefore it is important to make accurate computational models of them, which leads to potentially high computational cost.  Although the current model lacks electron-photon scattering, which is essential for a complete model, from the results it is possible to assess the viability of GPGPU acceleration in the case of a complete model.

Abstract: Combining both Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) into a single imaging device offers various advantages, but also many challenges. In order to assist in the development process, a signal fault detection algorithm has been created that is able to automatically detect when any of the 120 extremely sensitive SQUID magnetometers in the device saturate.
